Whale Watching

We went Whale Watching yesterday on an afternoon tour. We went out on a big boat associated with the Pacific Whale Foundation. We quickly went out to where a mother whale had just birthed a new baby whale and we saw the baby breach once, but mostly they just sat there floating, so later we took off to another area to see more. Derek watching the whales. Finally, we found a very active baby whale who jumped about 10 times out of the water, I was able to get about 4 pictures and only one in focus. It was a pretty awesome experience. We can't get too close, because it is against the law, unless they swim to you.

Hawaiian Skies

Last night we were able to finally catch a sunset up in Kaanapali. I love the palm trees in silouette.
We drove up to Haleakala, hoping to get a clear day. When we got up there we found out that the road was closed until 5:00 pm and it was 4:30 so we had to wait a while, so we hiked to a lookout over the crater and it was beautiful. You can see the cinder cones behind us.We were up over 10,000 feet and Derek was trying to call John and couldn't get a signal. While we were there the clouds came up and we were far above them. Everywhere we looked we could see clouds. Kind of like being on a plane. The sun was setting and we got this cool picture.

A little bit of Heaven! for now

We went out to Hookipa beach park to watch some wind surfing on the waves, but I guess it must not have been windy enough, because not one soul was in the water, so we took some other pictures instead.Derek doesn't like to get his feet dirty! But I just love to get my feet in the sand!
Doesn't this picture make Derek look tall?We went to Lahaina and had dinner at a place Derek had heard about called Cheeseburger in Paradise or something like that. It was pretty good. After we ate we walked around Lahaina and checked out the stores and galleries. It was raining so we bought an umbrella and it hasn't rained since. Isn't that the way it always is.Another night we went out to eat at a place called Mama's Fish House. It was really good and really expensive, but well worth it..It really had a cool atmosphere, but thank goodness we weren't there on the night it was raining, because the place was mainly open to the elements with some like big umbrellas and an ellaborate system to catch the water and drain it away.I don't usually like fish, but they use fresh fish caught by local fisherman and make up their menu daily (they print a new menu every day) with the fresh fish that they are supplied with. Well, I tasted Derek's fish and it was really good (what? you thought I was going to spend a fortune on a meal I wasn't sure I would like?) I had a Pork chop with Shrimp and it was to die for. But they made everything look so pretty. Derek had Macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi and our dinners came on such pretty plates.
But the coolest thing was when we ordered our desert it was called "The Black Pearl" and sure enough it looked like a black pearl. It was a mousse under that black shell. We drove down to the very end of the road south of Kehei and saw this Old Lava flow that came down from the mountain.
Then the same day we drove all the way north up another canyon and saw this Iao Needle. It was a sacred area a long time ago.
So far we haven't been in the water yet but I probably won't post any pictures of that because, well, you don't want to see us in bathing suits and because of theft we just leave the cameras behind. We have had a good time so far and I have even seen some whales from the shore and I even spied a turtle poke his head up from the waves at the beach by our condo. Way cool! Anyway, Aloha for now

Aloha!

So we are here in Maui! It is so nice to get out of the snow for awhile. Derek is helping out at a conference here, so I got to tag along. It was nice to meet some of his business associates. We get to stay in a really nice condo and we are enjoying it immensely. All over the condo they had these pretty little flowers. There must have been about 10 of them and they have stayed nice for days without being in water.
The day we got here it was stormy and windy and raining. When we went out in the evening there were these great big snails wandering the sidewalk, but the coolest thing about them were their shells. Aren't those the prettiest snails you have ever seen? (for a snail, anyway)I think everything is just prettier here. I think they even make the toilet paper look pretty!

Too Bad They Have to Grow Up!

I know I know - this is an older post that never got posted, but it's been sitting in my posts waiting for a turn and I am so far behind on things I just thought it would be fun to post it. Anyway, I scanned a lot of old Photo's of my son Jeff (aka Jeph) when he was young and it brought back so many memories of my cute little family. You know when you are in the midst of it all - it seems like it will never end and I am sure I was overwhelmed at times, but now it is wonderful to remember the cute little personalities that have developed over the years. So when you all look at your little children - Just know that that cute little boy or girl

Can grow up to be a full blown teenager

Aah, but isn't he still cute!!

Being a Grandma!

Part of being a Grandma is spoiling grandchildren. In the last 3 months I have had 3 little grandson's celebrate their birthdays. As I have stated before I enjoy taking them out on their birthday's for an ice cream and let them pick out a toy. Jason's birthday was clear back in October and I neglected to post his. We got to go to the Ice Cream parlor and he picked out a green ice cream and put gummy worms in it. I don't know why kids like that. I always pick the same thing - Chocolate with almonds. I just love it and since I don't get it that often any more, I order it whenever I can. He was so cute and I sure love him. He always has something wise or funny to say. Next, it was dear little Haden. Sadly his day got postponed due to his Aunt getting married on the same day as his birthday, but for him he didn't even know or understand. He was so funny because all he wanted was Red Ice Cream, but they only had strawberry and I guess that was pink, but when he saw the orange, he said that was red and you couldn't tell him otherwise. He likes to say "cheese" whenever you point a camera at him. We found a bucket of "fake" legos at Harmens and he was in 7th Heaven. Every time I asked him how old he was he would just say in his tiny little voice
"I don't know" Last of all was Connor. His day out was after Haden's because I didn't want to do them together. The whole point of this is for them to have a special time with Grandma. Because Haden came home and told him about his red Ice Cream which was actually orange, he wanted orange ice cream too. We went to a different place and his orange ice cream was pumpkin pie. He actually liked it and enjoyed it. After that we went to K-mart to look for a toy and he zeroed in on the target guns and didn't want to even look at anything else. When we came out of the store I asked him if he wanted a ride on one of the rides in front of the store and as you can see he got to ride all three. I think the temperature was around 15 degrees. It was cold. Maybe we should get something else beside ice cream in this cold? Nah!!! He didn't seem to feel it though and enjoyed himself. When he got home he pulled out his toy and let Haden have one of the guns and they sure had fun with them. I am so blessed to have all my grandchildren so close by and be able to get to know them.

Santa Claus is Coming!

This year my daughter Kathryn invited us to come over for Christmas Eve to bake cookies for Santa and of course to have a delicious meal.
Her Husband Jared, who is an awesome chef - made a wonderful prime rib. Which is one of my favorite meals. We had homemade rolls and other fixin's to go along with it.
Before dinner started we got the kids working on making some cookies for Santa. They sure had fun rolling out the dough and cutting the cookies out.
Grandma Burrell was here visiting this year and she got in on the action playing video games and visiting with some of her Great Grandchildren. John is such a good uncle. The kids just love him.One of my traditions is giving my grandchildren a new ornament every year. Here is Janette and Logan showing off their new ornaments. They even had a special tree to hang the children's ornaments on.
After dinner the kids were able to decorate the cookies for Santa.
Mmmn... Don't they look scrumptious? Of Course before bedtime all the kids got to open up one package and sure enough there were New Pajamas! Hey why doesn't Santa bring me new jamies?

It was a nice evening and we had a lot of fun!
